Apple Pay and Apple Wallet are not the same thing, although people often confuse the two. In simple language, Apple Wallet is a digital wallet present in your iPhone, while Apple Pay allows you to make payments from cards saved in that wallet. In Apple Wallet, you can keep your debit card, credit card as well as boarding passes, concert tickets, loyalty cards, some IDs and other digital items. A version of this can also be used on the Apple Watch. That is, you can think of a wallet as a digital place where important cards and passes are kept safe together.

While Apple Pay is a payment service, with the help of which the card saved in the wallet can be used to make payments at any shop or online. To give you an example, suppose a store has an NFC machine installed, you have to take the iPhone to it and press the side button twice, then you have to verify your identity with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode and the payment is complete.

Online payment method is also very easy. Select Apple Pay as a payment option on the website or app, then select your card and complete authentication with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. That is, the card is kept in the wallet and Apple Pay handles payments from it.

What happens when paying with Apple Pay?

Apple Pay’s system doesn’t just transmit your card information to the store. For security, Apple creates a unique Device Account Number (DAN) for each card. This number is stored in a special chip called the Secure Element of your device.

When you make a payment with Apple Pay, this device account number and a unique security code created for that particular transaction are sent to the merchant instead of the actual credit or debit card number. This means the merchant does not get your real card number.

Apple Pay requires authentication

For this reason, Apple Pay requires authentication. When making a payment in a store, Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode confirm that you are making the payment. Whether you’re buying from the App Store, ordering from a food delivery app, or buying from Safari’s website, the same verification process is used for online purchases.

If you want, you can also view the last four digits of any card’s Apple Pay number in Apple Wallet. For this, open the wallet, select the card and tap on the three dot button. After this, go to Card Details > Card Information and authenticate with Face ID. Here you will see the last four digits related to Apple Pay.

What does Apple Cash do?

Apple Cash is a feature associated with Apple Pay that is used to send money to friends or family. With this, you can send or request money from an Apple Cash card present in iMessage or Wallet.

After receiving money, the Apple Cash balance appears as a card in Wallet. In this, you can get options like adding money from a debit card, sending money to others or transferring money to a bank account. However, Apple Cash is not available everywhere and to use its feature, an eligible Apple account and an Apple device are required.
