October car sales record, the number crossed 5 lakh for the first time, Mahindra moved to the third position

October 2026 has been great for the Indian car market. The benefits of festive season demand, discounts and GST 2.0 are now showing in car sales. In October, wholesale passenger vehicle (PV) sales in the country crossed 5 lakh units for the first time. Maruti Suzuki has once again retained its top position by selling the highest number of cars. At the same time, Tata Motors overtook Mahindra to take second place.

According to car companies’ sales figures, Maruti Suzuki sold 2,16,789 vehicles in the domestic market in October 2026. In October last year, the company sold 1,80,675 units. Thus the company’s sales have increased by 20% annually.

Maruti Suzuki Senior Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Partho Banerjee said that the company has received good response across all segments from small cars to SUVs, MPVs and sedans. The company has about 2.45 lakh vehicles pending booking. At the same time, the dealership has only 12 days of stock left. This means that the demand for vehicles in the market is still more than the supply. The company expects its market share to grow by around 2% in October.

Tata Motors has reached the second position

October also saw changes in the ranking of car companies. Tata Motors has overtaken Mahindra to grab the second position. Tata Motors sold 73,894 passenger vehicles in October, up 20.9% from last year’s 61,134 units. At the same time, Mahindra sold 73,338 vehicles during the period. In October last year, the company sold 71,624 units. Thus Mahindra’s sales have increased by around 2.4%. However, there was a difference of only 556 vehicles between the sales of Tata and Mahindra.

Hyundai and Kia sales also increase

Hyundai Motor India sold 62,799 vehicles in October. The company’s sales in the same month last year were 53,792 units. Thus the sales have increased by 16.7%. The company’s SUV venue played an important role in this. 13,017 units of the Venue were shipped to dealers in October, its best figure ever. At the same time, Kia India ranked among the top-5 companies with sales of 33,462 vehicles. This time the company has overtaken Toyota Kirloskar Motor. Toyota sold 40,257 vehicles in October 2025. According to Kia, sales of electric cars have grown well along with its new models and CNG vehicles. The company recorded its highest ever monthly EV sales in October.
