Strictness regarding car safety in India is increasing continuously. To reduce the damage caused by road accidents, preparations are now being made to make more comprehensive changes in car safety than ever before. In this regard, a plan has been prepared to bring India NCAP 2.0.
India’s new version of NCAP may be implemented from October 2027, according to the plan of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. In the current system, it mainly looks at how much protection is provided to the occupants of the car in the event of an accident. But the security in the new system will not be limited to the time of the crash.
In Bharat NCAP 2.0, the safety of the car is to be tested from different aspects before, during and after the accident. It aims to improve the safety of Indian cars and bring them closer to international safety standards.
Now the car has to go through 5 strict crash tests
The new system will significantly increase the scope of car safety checks. Currently, in NCAP in India, three major crash tests are conducted for a car’s star rating. In the proposed India NCAP 2.0, the car will have to undergo five different crash tests.
These include an offset frontal impact test at 64 km/h, a full-width rigid barrier test at 50 km/h, a lateral impact test at 50 km/h, a pole side impact test at 32 km/h and a rear impact test at 50 km/h. Through these tests, the body structure of the car and the strength of various parts will be tested more comprehensively.
Prevention of accidents will also be given attention
Bharat NCAP 2.0 will not only look at how much safety a car provides to passengers during an accident. It is also set to investigate how well the car helps prevent accidents before they happen.
For this, the capability of safety features such as ADAS, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring provided in the car will be evaluated. That is, if the car’s safety systems detect a potential hazard and warn the driver or help avoid a collision, the performance of these technologies will also be part of the safety assessment.
Safety of pedestrians and two-wheeler riders is also important
In a road accident, it’s not just the people sitting inside the car who are at risk. Pedestrians, cyclists and people riding two-wheelers can also be severely affected. For this reason, vulnerable road user protection has also been made an important part of the new framework. Under this, the design and structure of the front part of the car will be examined.
Areas around the bonnet, bumper and windshield will be examined to see how they can reduce the risk of injury to a pedestrian or cyclist in the event of a collision with a car.
The rescue system will also be examined after the accident
The first few minutes after a major accident are critical. Therefore, in the new safety regime, the behavior of the car after an accident is set to be under scrutiny. Bharat NCAP 2.0 will see if car doors automatically unlock immediately after an accident. Apart from this, the system for immediate shutdown of fuel supply and the system for sending necessary information to emergency services can also be examined.
If a car is able to send its location and alert emergency services after an accident, it can help rescue teams reach the spot.
The range of safety ratings will be wider than before
The focus of Bharat NCAP 2.0 will not be limited to passenger safety in the event of a crash. In which various aspects like accident prevention, crash protection, vulnerable road user safety and post crash response will be given importance.
If the proposed changes are implemented from October 2027, car companies will have to pay more attention to the safety of their vehicles than ever before. At the same time, car-buying customers will also get an opportunity to understand how the car’s safety is in different situations rather than just the star rating.
