The preferences of SUV buyers in India are constantly changing. Some people want a powerful car at a low price, while some like an SUV with better features and a stylish design. This is the reason why companies are also busy launching new models and updating their vehicles in this segment. Now the sales figures for the first six months of the financial year 2027 i.e. from April to September 2026 have been revealed. Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki vehicles dominate these figures. Most importantly, the Tata Punch has taken the top spot in terms of sales, while the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, which was once in the top-5, has moved down to the sixth position this time.

Tata Punch has become the number-1 SUV in the country

The name of Tata Punch tops the list of top-5 SUVs. A total of 1,23,287 units were sold between April and September 2026. The company had sold 73,455 units in the same period last year. Thus an increase of 67.84% was recorded in the sales of punch year-on-year.

Its low price, SUV-like looks and its utility for city driving make it popular among consumers. Sales figures show that demand for small SUVs is strong.

Tata Nexon finished second

Tata Motors’ second SUV, the Nexon, is also not far behind in the sales race. It recorded sales of 1,11,919 units in the first half of FY2027 and was at the second position. 89,574 units were sold during the same period last year. Thus its sales have increased by 24.97% annually.

For Tata Motors, having both Punch and Nexon in the top-2 is a big achievement. This shows that the company’s SUVs are getting a good response from customers with different price ranges and needs.

Maruti Suzuki Franks also showed its strength

Maruti Suzuki Franc came in third with sales of 1,10,135 units. Compared to the first half of last year, its sales have increased by 43.40%. The Fronx appeals to customers who want SUV-like looks but also want ease of use in everyday driving.

Mahindra Scorpio’s strong hold continues

The Mahindra Scorpio range, which includes the Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic, recorded total sales of 93,488 units. There has been an increase of 10.46 percent compared to last year. Scorpio maintains its strong position among Mahindra’s best-selling vehicles. Its strong identity and SUV style attract customers.

Hyundai Creta is in the top-5, but sales have declined

Hyundai Creta stood fifth with sales of 89,727 units. However, its sales have not grown as much as the other top-5 models. 99,345 units of Creta were sold in the same period last year. This time its sales were down by 9.68%.

Why did Brezza drop out of the top-5?

The most surprising change in the list is the ranking of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. The SUV slipped to sixth place. An important reason for this is said to be the entry of the updated model in June. Production and wholesale figures were affected during the model update, which led to slightly lower sales during the period.
