The demand for electric cars in India continues to grow and its impact was clearly seen in the August 2026 sales figures. Mahindra XEV 9S was the best selling electric car in the country this month. This three-row electric SUV beats the Tata Punch EV by a very narrow margin. There was a difference of only 78 units between the two.

Mahindra XEV 9S Sale

According to media reports and AutoPunditz, Mahindra shipped 4,508 units of the XEV 9S to dealerships in August. Meanwhile, Tata Motors dispatched 4,430 units of the Punch EV during the same period. That means there was a difference of only 78 units in the sales of both the electric cars. Demand for the XEV 9S has been on the rise for quite some time now. This electric SUV has been steadily strengthening its grip since customer deliveries began in January 2026.

Its 4,131 units were shipped in July, which increased to 4,508 units in August. That means month-on-month sales have increased by around 9.1 percent. The company sells the Mahindra XEV 9S with three battery pack options. It includes 59kWh, 70kWh and 79kWh batteries. Depending on the variant, the company claims a range of 521 km to 679 km on a full charge. Its ex-showroom price is Rs 20.65 lakh.

Tata Punch EV sales also strong

Although the XEV 9S was on top in August, Tata Motors also performed strongly. Punch EV took second place with 4,430 units. Notably, only 1,476 units were dispatched in August 2025. That means the dispatch of Punch EV in August this year was more than three times.

Talking about the price, the Tata Punch EV is much cheaper than the XEV 9S. Its ex-showroom price is Rs 9.79 lakh. Tata’s Nexon EV stood third with 3,975 units. Compared to August last year, its sales recorded a year-on-year increase of 44 percent.

Best selling electric car in August

The MG Windsor EV ranks fourth in August’s Top-10 Electric Cars list. 3,705 units of it were shipped. However, its dispatches this time were about 18 percent lower as compared to 4,511 units in August last year.

After this, the Tata Harrier EV took the fifth position with 2,103 units. Mahindra’s Winfast Limogreen is at the eighth position with 1,901 units.

Tata Tiago EV was ninth in the top-10, with 1,730 units shipped. Mahindra BE 6 is at the tenth position with 1,696 units. Compared to last year, its sales increased by 9 percent.

According to AutoPunditz data, five Tata Motors models were among the top-10 electric cars in August. These include Punch EV, Nexon EV, Harrier EV, Sierra EV and Tiago EV. A total of 14,168 units of these five models were shipped to dealerships in August.
