Millions of Amazon Prime customers in the United States may qualify for refunds of up to $200 under an expanded settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The updated agreement broadens eligibility and increases the maximum payout for consumers affected by alleged misleading subscription practices.
Amazon began sending payments to newly eligible customers in October 2026. Eligible members do not need to submit a new claim or complete additional paperwork to receive payments under the expanded refund process.
Amazon Prime Refund: Why Is the FTC Offering Payments?
The refund program stems from a $2.5 billion settlement announced in September 2025. The FTC alleged that Amazon enrolled millions of consumers in Prime memberships without their informed consent and made the cancellation process unnecessarily difficult.
Amazon agreed to the settlement without admitting wrongdoing. The agreement includes up to $1.5 billion in consumer refunds and a separate $1 billion civil penalty.
According to the FTC, the revised settlement is designed to extend payments to more affected customers and simplify the distribution process.
Who Qualifies for an Amazon Prime Refund of Up to $200?
To qualify, customers generally must meet specific requirements established under the settlement. These include being a U.S. consumer, enrolling in Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025, through a challenged enrollment process or unsuccessfully attempting to cancel through the specified online cancellation process.
Customers must also have used no more than 20 Prime benefits during a 12-month period of enrollment. These benefits can include services such as Prime Video, Prime Music and eligible shipping benefits.
The revised terms expand eligibility to customers who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits in a year, a group that was not covered by the earlier automatic refund phase.
How Much Money Can Amazon Prime Members Receive?
The maximum total payment has increased from $51 to $200 per eligible customer. However, $200 is the maximum possible amount, not a guaranteed payment for every subscriber.
Amazon calculates refunds under the settlement’s terms, taking into account eligible subscription fees and the applicable payment rules.
Customers who previously received a settlement payment may qualify for an additional payment of up to $149. This additional round is conditional on the amount of settlement money accepted by consumers reaching the required threshold.
Under the revised arrangement, supplemental payments are scheduled to begin by April 2027 if the relevant conditions are met.
When Will Amazon Send the Refunds?
Amazon began distributing automatic payments to newly eligible customers on October 1, 2026. The FTC says payments will be sent through PayPal, Venmo or mailed checks, depending on the payment method used for the distribution.
Eligible consumers do not need to file another claim, respond to a notification or complete a new form for this expanded payment phase.
The FTC says eligible customers should receive their refunds by April 2027. Recipients should check their payment notifications carefully because settlement payments generally expire 60 days after issuance if they are not accepted.
How to Check Your Amazon Prime Refund Status
Customers can review the official refund information published by the Federal Trade Commission to understand the eligibility rules, payment schedule and available assistance.

Consumers should also be alert to fraudulent messages claiming to offer faster payments or guaranteed refunds. The FTC warns that it is not contacting consumers directly about these Amazon refunds.
Amazon will not ask customers to pay a fee to receive settlement money. Anyone requesting an upfront payment, banking credentials or sensitive personal information in exchange for a refund should be treated with caution.
