Gold Purity Check: The festive season has started in India. Buying gold during this festive season is considered very auspicious. Especially on Dhanteras day people definitely buy gold jewellery, coins or biscuits. This year the festival of Dhanteras will be celebrated on November 6. As Dhanteras approaches, the demand for gold in the bullion market increases significantly. If you too are thinking of buying gold on this auspicious occasion, then know some important things before going to the shop. Amid the growing crowd in the market it is very important to check whether you are getting pure gold or not. You can check the purity of gold yourself by following some simple methods.
Why just looking at Hallmark isn’t enough
While buying gold from any place it is the first responsibility of the customer to check its purity. People are generally satisfied by seeing the hallmark mark on jewellery. A hallmark indicates that the quality of the gold has been checked. It meets the prescribed standards. In India, this certificate of gold purity is issued by Bureau of Indian Standards i.e. BIS. But in this day and age Hallmark marks are not to be believed just by seeing. In some cases, fake hallmarks are also affixed to the jewellery. So, it is very important to be careful while shopping. To know the real purity of gold, you should know how to check the hallmark properly.
The HUID code will open a complete jewelry loop
Hallmark Unique Identification i.e. HUID code is the biggest weapon to get accurate information about purity of gold. This is a special six-digit alphanumeric code. This code is written on every BIS hallmarked gold jewellery. Customers can check this code through BIS Care app in their mobile phones or through the official website. Checking this code shows the complete information about the jewellery. With its help you can easily avoid any kind of fraud while buying gold.
How to check purity of gold by phone
The purity of gold jewelery can be checked online before buying it. For this you have to follow only five simple steps on your smartphone. This will eliminate the risk of buying fake jewellery.
- Look for the code: First of all look carefully for the 6 digit alphanumeric HUID code on your gold jewelry. This code is usually written near the BIS logo, the gold purity mark (such as 22K or 18K) or the jeweller’s identification mark.
- Download the app: Go to the Google Play Store on your Android phone or the Apple App Store on your iPhone. From there download the official BIS Care app on your phone. Actual information about Hallmarked Jewelery is available from this app.
- Select Verify HUID: After opening the app, you will see the Verify HUID option on the home screen. Select this option. After this, carefully enter the six digit code written on the jewellery.
- Check Information: As soon as you enter the code, the complete information about that jewelery will appear on your phone screen. This includes jeweller’s registration number, date of hallmarking, name of hallmarking centre, type of jewellery, details of gold purity.
- Match Receipt: Match the information displayed on the app with the hallmark impression on the jewellery. Also match it with the receipt given by the jeweller. If there is any discrepancy between the information in the app or the receipt, ask the shopkeeper directly before buying the jewellery.
