Let’s know the whole matter in detail. Let us know why the Constitution of Student Union is being prepared. How this decision was taken will be known.

Meeting between committee and student representatives

In response to the demands of the student union, the Jamia administration constituted a 7-member committee on October 18 to resolve the problems of the students on hunger strike. The committee contacted the protesting students on the morning of October 19 and reached the protest site to initiate negotiations. After the initial interaction was positive, the committee asked for a list of students and invited a representative group of students to the office of the Dean of Social Sciences for a discussion.

After this, on 20 October, the student representatives attended a 2-hour meeting held at the office of the ‘Dean of Social Sciences’, in which the details (minutes) of the discussion were formalized, but despite several attempts, the students did not agree to sign the minutes.

Decision to constitute Constitution Drafting Committee on 21 October

After this, in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Mazhar Asif on 21st October, Vice Chancellor Prof. In this meeting, the recommendations of the High Level Committee and their discussions with the students were discussed, after which it was decided to form a committee to draft the constitution of ‘Jamia Millia Islamia Students Union’ (JMISU) under Section 23(J) and (K) of the JMI Act, 1988.

The committee will do this work

The committee constituted to draft the Constitution of Jamia Students Union will consider the reasons for the dissolution of ‘Jamia Millia Islamia Students Union’ (JMISU) in 2006, various court decisions related to JMISU and the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee (2007).

The administration has issued a statement saying that a comprehensive investigation is needed into the matter as the previous student union at the university was dissolved in 2006. Many changes have taken place in the last two decades, making it necessary to review the issue in the context of the existing legal and institutional framework.

According to the statement issued, the committee will examine court orders related to student union elections in Jamia, recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee report on student bodies and student union elections (which apply to universities, colleges and institutions of higher learning across India), and rules and regulations of Jamia.
