National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) will change the eligibility criteria of Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) and State Teacher Eligibility Test (STET). NCTE has constituted an expert committee with the aim of reviewing the guidelines issued for the existing Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) and suggesting necessary changes to accommodate ITEP graduates. The move comes at a time when the first batch of ITEP students is about to pass out in the academic session 2027-28. Although NCTE recognizes the four-year ITEP, the current TET guidelines do not clearly include it as an eligibility criterion. In fact, passing the relevant TET is a mandatory condition for appointment to teaching posts.
Let’s know the whole matter in detail. Let’s learn about ITEP. Along with this, we will also know about the committee formed by NCTE. Along with this, we will also know about the proposed changes.
ITEP can be done after 12th, equivalent to B.Ed.
Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) has been launched under the New Education Policy 2020. This 4-year graduation course can be done after 12th, which is equivalent to the two-year B.Ed currently done after graduation. Currently, 409 higher education institutions are approved to conduct ITEP, with a total of 777 units admitting 38,850 students. NCTE has recognized this course as an education course, but it is not recognized to appear in CTET and STET. In such a situation, NCET is now going to change CTET and STET eligibility criteria.
Who is on the committee?
The committee constituted by NCTE will be headed by Prof Chand Kiran Saluja, former head of DU Central Institute of Education (CIE). So representatives of NCERT, KVS, Ministry of Education, NCTE and CBSE have been included in the committee.
The committee will review these issues
A committee constituted by NCTE will review the existing eligibility criteria of CTET and STET. Along with this, the committee will suggest such changes so that ITEP graduates can appear for CTET and CTET examination. For this, the existing provisions related to CTET and STET will also be reviewed. In addition, wherever necessary, it will also suggest changes as per ITEP.
