IIT Bombay has issued new guidelines to prevent discrimination and promote equality on campus. Under this, students, teachers and staff have been asked to avoid asking personal information like caste, admission category and JEE advanced rank of any student. According to the organization, such questions can make students feel uncomfortable and discriminate against them. Along with this, a strict notification has also been given regarding casteist jokes, insulting comments and discriminatory messages on social media.
Avoid questions related to caste and exam rank
IIT Bombay issued the guidelines via email on Tuesday. It aims to create an environment on campus where all students are treated with respect. Under the guidelines, students have been advised to avoid asking questions related to caste, admission category and examination performance. It also includes questions related to JEE Advanced Rank and GATE Score.
The organization says that the purpose of asking questions may only be to obtain information, but it may make the other student uncomfortable. So everyone should respect the privacy and feelings of others.
Racist jokes and online messages are also banned
In the new guidelines, instructions are also given on messages and comments that insult someone on the basis of caste, gender, religion and sexual orientation. Such jokes or things that insult or intimidate a person will come under the ambit of the rules. These guidelines are not limited to face-to-face interactions. This will also apply to communications on WhatsApp, Facebook, email and other digital platforms. The organization will take strict action against the violators of the rules.
Increase mutual interaction through shared interests
IIT Bombay has advised students to discuss topics like studies, sports, music, films, hobbies and their hometown to interact with each other. This will increase mutual understanding among the students and improve the campus environment.
