Donald Trump’s Republican Party has suffered a major political setback in the 2026 US midterm elections. The Democratic Party did well and won seven seats in the Senate. Democrats may also gain an edge in the House of Representatives. The role of women voters was very important in the victory of the Democratic Party in this election. Large numbers of women voted and chose Democratic candidates over the Republican Party. Earlier in India too women have played an important role in elections and the participation of half of the population has been very important in the election results and the election results have been dominated by women. Now even in America, half of the population has played.
According to estimates, around 6.4 crore women voted, while the number of male voters stood at 5.6 crore. The total voting participation of women is said to be around 53 percent. According to exit poll data, 61 percent of female voters supported Democratic candidates, while 38 percent of women did. Republican Party Voted in favour. Compared to the 2024 presidential election, support for Democrats has increased by 13 percent. This change was larger than the estimate made before the election.
In pre-election surveys, 56 percent of women said they preferred Democratic candidates, while 37 percent indicated support for Republican candidates. That is, during the elections, the women voters’ inclination towards the Democratic Party increased more than expected.
Democrats gained support from young women
The Democratic Party’s hold on women voters appeared strong in almost all major social and age groups. About 70 percent of young women voters aged 18 to 29 voted for Democratic candidates. In the 2024 elections, this figure was 61 percent. That means support for Democrats among young women has increased by nine percentage points.
Support from black female voters also remained largely with the Democratic Party. About 93 percent of black women voted for Democratic candidates, while six percent supported the Republican Party. Democrats also have good leads among Hispanic and Latino women voters. 74 percent of Hispanic women and 68 percent of Latino women supported Democratic candidates.
The biggest change was seen in the attitudes of Hispanic women voters. In this category, support for the Democratic Party is expected to increase by 28 percent over 2024. At the same time, support for Democrats among black women increased by five percentage points.
Women made new history in American politics
In this election, women’s power was not limited to voting but many women won and laid the foundation of a new history in American politics. With Deb Holland’s victory in New Mexico, she became the first Native American woman to become governor of a US state. At the same time, Keisha Lance Bottoms’ victory in Georgia made her the state’s first black female governor.
Juliana Stratton’s victory in Illinois was also historic. After they reach the Senate, the state will be represented by two women senators. He will work with incumbent Senator Tammy Duckworth.
Apart from this, Georgia, Minnesota, Tennessee and Ohio paved the way for electing women governors for the first time. South Carolina also claimed the state’s first female US senator with the victory of Ann Andrews.
Women’s participation in the House of Representatives is also on track to set a new record. For the first time in American history, more than 100 women are expected to be represented in the lower house at once.
Resentment grew due to inflation and Trump’s policies
Not only political equations but also day-to-day problems of common people are considered to be the main reason behind election results. Issues such as rising inflation, fuel prices, import tariffs and a war with Iran have fueled resentment against the Trump administration. Which had a direct impact on the household budget of American families.
The increase in fuel prices has increased the cost of production, transportation and distribution of goods. It also affected the prices of daily necessities. The annual inflation rate rose to 3.7 percent in September from 3.4 percent in August, according to data from the US Labor Department.
Many global studies have found that inflation affects women more. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2022 report, women’s incomes are less likely to grow in line with inflation than men’s. In such a situation, the burden of household expenses and economic pressure falls more on women.
In addition, the Trump administration’s hard-right policies and decisions regarding women’s rights also fueled discontent. This was the reason why the attitude of women voters emerged as the most important factor in the American elections this time.
