Leylah Fernandez is set to face Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the round of 16 at the 2026 Ningbo Open on Wednesday, October 21, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake. The Canadian enters the match after a hard-fought comeback victory over seventh seed Elise Mertens.

The matchup brings together two players with contrasting routes through the tournament. Fernandez had to recover from a set down against Mertens, while Sasnovich advanced after beating Daria Kasatkina in straight sets.

Leylah Fernandez Reaches Ningbo Open Round of 16

Fernandez showed resilience in her previous match, defeating Mertens 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. The Canadian dropped the opening set but raised her level in the final two sets to secure the win after nearly three hours on court.

The victory was an important result against a seeded opponent at the WTA 500 event in China. Fernandez will now look to carry that momentum into her meeting with Sasnovich as the tournament moves toward its final stages.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich Arrives After Straight-Sets Win

Sasnovich earned her place in the last 16 by defeating Australian representative Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 6-2. The Belarusian qualifier produced a strong performance to move through the opening round without needing a deciding set.

Her run also included victories in qualifying, giving her several matches on the Ningbo hard courts before the meeting with Fernandez. That additional court time could be valuable as she prepares for another demanding contest.

Fernandez vs Sasnovich: Head-to-Head Record

The two players have been closely matched in their previous meetings. Their head-to-head record since 2022 stands at 2-2, according to Tennis Majors, adding another layer of interest to their upcoming contest.

Fernandez, ranked No. 30 in the available tournament listings, enters with a higher ranking than Sasnovich, who is listed at No. 122. However, rankings alone do not determine the outcome, particularly in a tournament where qualifiers can build confidence through successive wins.
