Trump’s big responsibility for AI companies is to keep an eye on the technology themselves

US President Donald Trump said the country’s major AI companies have agreed to an agreement to monitor the development of artificial intelligence. Trump says that America does not want to stop the pace of AI. Instead of imposing new rules and regulations on AI, his government is asking companies to monitor their own technology.

Trump said this after meeting top executives of AI companies at the White House. He called AI a very important technology for America and said it would not be right to stop its development.

Why is Trump promoting the development of AI?

Trump has made it clear that his government will not support calls to ban the development of AI or to impose additional security regulations, i.e. to place barriers on the industry. According to media reports AP, Trump said he would never stop the development of such technology, which could be bigger than the industrial revolution. He also said that America is making progress in AI.

Trump also said that he is talking about renaming AI to super intelligence. He argued that it is not right to call it artificial. However, there are also growing concerns about AI. In particular, questions have been raised about AI agents acting automatically and sometimes behaving differently than expected. Issues related to OpenAI and Anthropic’s AI systems have also raised these concerns.

Who attended the White House meeting?

The heads of many major US tech companies attended Trump’s meeting. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson was also present in the meeting. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk attended the meeting. Apart from Musk’s company, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella were also present in the meeting.

After the meeting, Trump said that AI companies themselves are now realizing that they need to monitor their technology. He called it self-policing, the process of monitoring oneself.

What’s in AI Companies’ Self-Policing Agreement?

According to the agreement, each company will have an obligation to develop its AI technology securely. Companies also have to ensure that people and consumers maintain trust in AI.

For this, companies have to create a system within themselves that can monitor AI. The job of these systems will be to identify the problem, investigate it and correct it if necessary. Companies will also have to create a separate team, which will monitor these security measures. Apart from this, these systems will also be examined with the help of experts or auditors. The agreement also mentions an independent board committee. The committee will monitor the AI security related work of the companies and see their reports from time to time.

What is meant by a morally binding contract?

Trump has called the agreement morally binding. This simply means that companies have accepted it as a liability, but this is not a law under which companies can be legally forced.

That is, companies have agreed to take responsibility for developing and monitoring AI safely. But this agreement itself is not a legally enforceable government regulation. The agreement was signed by Trump and executives or senior representatives of Anthropic, Google, Meta, OpenAI, NVIDIA and xAI.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Elon Musk were present during this meeting held at the White House. Trump also shared a seating chart of the meeting on his Truth social account. The meeting came at a time when Trump once again said that the US wants to maintain its lead in the field rather than stop the development of AI.
