Nowadays, while using many online services related to Aadhaar, one has to verify the identity through the OTP received on the mobile. But sometimes OTP is not received on time due to poor network, delay in SMS or technical glitch. In such a situation the work may stop. Considering this problem, UIDAI has provided TOTP option in the new Aadhaar app. With its help, users can get the code without waiting for the SMS.
TOTP stands for Time-Based One-Time Password is a code that can be generated by the Aadhaar app. Its feature is that it does not require internet or mobile network every time to generate the code. However, the TOTP option must be available on the service where it is to be used.
What is Aadhaar TOTP and how does it work?
The full name of TOTP is Time Based One-Time Password. This Aadhaar app has an 8 digit code, which changes every 30 seconds. Unlike OTP received via SMS, there is no need to wait for the message to generate the code. This system generates a code based on the time of the phone. So the mobile date and time must be correct. If the time on the phone is incorrect, there may be a problem verifying the code.
This feature can be used especially when SMS OTP is not available for any Aadhaar related service. Users can generate a new code by opening the Aadhaar app and use it within the stipulated time.
What are the advantages compared to SMS OTP?
SMS OTP is sometimes affected by network issues or message delays. Apart from this, criminals can try to access the messages sent to the user’s number through cyber fraud like SIM swap.
In TOTP, the code is generated directly in the Aadhaar application, so there is no need to wait for an SMS to receive it. This can simplify the verification process. However, it should not be considered more secure than SMS OTP in every situation. It is also important to take care of the security of the phone and the Aadhaar app.
How to generate TOTP in Aadhaar app?
To use TOTP, first install the official Aadhaar app on your phone and log into it. After this follow these steps.
- Open the Aadhaar app and go to its dashboard.
- Tap on the Security section below.
- Here select the option of Generate TOTP.
- An 8 digit code will appear on the screen.
- Notice the 30 second timer shown with the code.
- Copy the code and enter it on the respective verification page.
Keep in mind that the website or service you are doing verification on should have an option for TOTP. If only SMS OTP option is available, verification through TOTP will not be possible.
Keep these things in mind while using TOTP
First of all, set your phone time to automatic date and time, so that the code can be generated correctly. Use the code shown on the screen within 30 seconds. When the timer expires, a new code will be generated and the old code will not work.
Apart from this, do not give your phone to strangers and keep the Aadhaar app safe. The TOTP feature can be helpful in case of network or SMS issues, but it will only be used properly if you enter the code on time and the relevant service supports it.
