Following student protests in France, the government has decided to change the university admission system. Under this, changes to the Parcoursup platform are planned to be implemented from 2027 to 2028. France’s Minister of Higher Education, Philippe Baptiste, gave information about the reform of the university admission system. The aim of the government is to make the admission process more clear and transparent, so that students can get relief from problems faced during application.

Through the Parcoursup platform, students apply for admission to universities and various higher education courses. However, questions have been raised against this system for a long time. The government believes that the proposed changes will improve the admission process.

Anger among students

Parcoursup has emerged as a key issue in student protests. The protesting students say that unclear admission rules lead to uncertainty regarding admission to elective courses.

Student organizations have welcomed some of the government’s moves, but have said the agitation will continue until their demands are met. Before the change was announced, student representatives also met with Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu.

Demand to reduce shortage of teachers in schools

The demands of students are not limited to admissions to universities. They are also demanding to address the shortage of teachers in schools, reduce the number of students in classes and repair old buildings. Emphasis is placed on improving facilities in schools in economically weaker communities.

Inflation and education costs are also big issues

Rising inflation and education-related costs in France have also raised concerns among students. Incidents of violence, vandalism and clashes with the police were reported at some places during the protests. President Emmanuel Macron has also asked the government to pay attention to the reasonable demands of the students.
