If the old mobile number is still registered in the RC i.e. registration certificate of your car or bike, don’t delay in getting it changed. Many online services and important vehicle related information require correct mobile number. After changing the number, if it is not updated in the government records, there may be problems while using some vehicle related services.

The good thing is that there is no need to go to the RTO office every time to update the mobile number. The online facility for this is available on the official vehicle portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Vehicle owners can update the new number in the record by verifying it through OTP. However, to complete the process, you must have the correct information regarding the vehicle.

How to update mobile number on vehicle portal?

If you want to register a new mobile number in the RC of your car or bike, you can follow the steps given below.

  • First of all go to the official website of VAHAN.
  • Login to available online services.
  • After this open the My Profile section.
  • Here find Update Mobile Number option and click on it.
  • Enter your new mobile number in the space provided.
  • Now click on Generate OTP.
  • Enter the OTP received on the new number and submit.
  • If the process is successful, a success message may appear on the screen.

A similar process for updating mobile number is also described in the Government User Guide. However, portal options and screens may appear different depending on the vehicle or service.

What information will be required to change mobile number?

Before starting the online process, keep the RC of your vehicle with you. Vehicle registration number can be asked while updating mobile number. In some services, information related to chassis number or engine number may also have to be entered.

In some mobile number update processes on government portals, the option of verification through last digits of chassis number and engine number is also provided. So, be careful while filling the information. If the details entered do not match with the vehicle record, there may be difficulty in proceeding with the process.

An OTP will be sent to the new mobile number which you want to update in the record. So enter the number correctly and make sure SMS can be received on it.

Do I have to go to RTO to update mobile number?

Online facility is available on Vahan Portal for general mobile number update. In many cases, vehicle owners can do this at home. But not all vehicle records are the same. The process may vary depending on the state, vehicle record or relevant service status.

If the update option is not available on the portal, the vehicle information is not matching or the application is not complete, you have to contact the concerned RTO.

Keep these things in mind while updating

To update mobile number, use only authorized transport or vehicle portal. Do not enter vehicle details on any unknown link and do not share OTP with any other person. After the process is complete, read the message on the screen carefully. This will let you know if the mobile number has been updated or if any additional processing is required.
