Sri Lanka has taken the initiative to open its market doors to Indian businessmen and investors on a large scale. Sri Lanka High Commissioner Mahishini Colonen has invited Indian business leaders to participate in the Sri Lanka Expo 2027. The Expo will be held in Colombo next year (2027) in January.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner Mahishini Colone said Sri Lanka and India already have strong economic and people-to-people ties, but there is still a lot of potential in the areas of trade and investment. Sri Lanka is going to host ‘Sri Lanka Expo 2027’ from 14th to 17th January 2027 in the capital Colombo. Through this mega event, Sri Lanka is opening new and bigger doors of investment and trade for Indian businessmen.

What sectors is Sri Lanka eyeing?

Sri Lanka has opened opportunities for collaboration in many key areas for Indian companies.

  • Trade and investment
  • Ports and Logistics
  • production
  • Tourism
  • Renewable energy
  • Digital services

According to the High Commissioner, Sri Lanka’s geographical position and connectivity make it important for regional business. In such a situation, opportunities may also arise for Indian companies to reach new markets through Sri Lanka.

Emphasis on business growth in BIMSTEC countries

This came to light at the ‘Business Opportunities in BIMSTEC Countries’ conference, which was attended by senior diplomats from all seven BIMSTEC member countries, MEA officials and around 80 Indian business representatives.

MEA Secretary (East) Ambassador Rudrendra Tandon emphasized the potential for further expansion of trade and economic ties between BIMSTEC countries and appealed to Indian businessmen to explore opportunities available in neighboring countries. BIMSTEC Secretary-General Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey also said that increasing private sector participation and business-to-business contacts is important for regional economic cooperation.

Businessmen will gather in Colombo

International buyers, investors and industry representatives will participate in Sri Lanka Expo 2027 along with Sri Lankan exporters. Sri Lanka is trying to create new trade and investment partnerships through this platform. Sri Lanka is now conveying the message that relations with India should be expanded to include trade, investment and new industry partnerships rather than being limited to diplomacy and tourism.
