The bake unions have postponed their proposed three-day strike from September 28 to 30. The decision was taken after a meeting held between the Indian Banks Association (IBA) and UFBU on the night of September 27. According to ANI, UFBU said that a meeting was held between IBA and UFBU on September 27 at 9:30 pm. After discussion in the meeting, it was decided that a high level committee of IBA and UFBU would be constituted immediately to discuss the issue of declaring remaining Saturdays as holidays.

According to UFBU, this committee will consider all possible options regarding the issue and discuss with all concerned parties. The objective of the committee will be to find an acceptable solution keeping in mind the needs of all the stakeholders and especially the bank customers.

At the same time, it has also been agreed to take forward negotiations on the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for officers in Scale IV and above. The UFBU said discussions may be initiated with the IBA to take into account the concerns of the unions and associations to propose changes in the PLI scheme to the government.

Guaranteed resolution of outstanding issues

It further said that the remaining issues listed in the minutes of March 8, 2024 will be discussed between the parties for early resolution. He also said that, in view of this, the UFBU agreed that the proposed agitation program and strike action would be postponed.

Let us tell you before this There was a one-day strike on September 11 and another three-day bank strike was announced from Monday, but after a meeting on Sunday night, it was decided to call off the strike.

What is the demand for bank employees?

Bank unions have a number of special demands under the UFBU. Their main demand is that banking should be five days a week. This means declaring all Saturdays and Sundays as holidays. Unions say this has been discussed but has been delayed.

They also want better pension benefits overall. NPS employees should get option to switch back. They should get old pension scheme again. Pending pay revision also needs to be resolved. Issues of performance related incentives also need to be properly addressed soon.

Banks were open on Sundays

The proposed strike was preceded by a holiday weekend on September 26 and 27. To avoid further disruption in banking services, the government directed public sector banks and regional rural banks to operate normally on Sundays. The Reserve Bank of India also allowed opening of bank branches, offices, ATMs and currency chests on Sunday.

Bank of India also allowed similar operations separately. The timing of the proposed strike was also important as September 30 marks the half-yearly closure of banks, which include operations such as settlement, provisioning, treasury and market activity. According to the union body’s circular, UFBU will now postpone the strike and other agitation programmes, there will be no immediate strike scheduled for September 28-30.
