Ancient manuscripts of India contain important information related to many subjects like mathematics, astronomy, medicine, philosophy, literature and metallurgy. However, the pages of these manuscripts deteriorate over time. In many places the letters have faded, the pages are torn and the handwriting has become difficult to understand. In such a situation, IIT Jodhpur is developing new technology with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to preserve Indian knowledge and history.
This technology will help convert old manuscripts into digital text, making their study easier for researchers and students.
IIT Jodhpur developed the AI system
The AI system being developed by IIT Jodhpur aims to preserve the information present in ancient manuscripts in digital form. In older manuscripts, sometimes letters are blurred, pages are stained, or words are written on top of each other. This AI based technology will help to understand these problems and convert written text into digital form.
Adaptive AI orchestrators will play an important role
At the core of this technology is the Adaptive AI Orchestrator. This will create coordination between the various technical parts of the system. First the manuscript will be identified. After this, the script, language and other features used in it will be analyzed. If more than one language or script is written on a page, the system will also evaluate it. This will make the process of converting manuscripts into digital text more manageable.
Six Indian scripts will get support
This AI platform is being developed to support six major Indian scripts. They include Devanagari, Sharda, Granth, Nandinagari, Modi and Tulu-Tiglari. In addition, there are also plans to prepare standardized language packs for classical and regional Indian languages. This can help in understanding and researching manuscripts written in different languages in digital form.
It will help preserve Indian knowledge
Assistant Professor associated with this research Dr. According to Dinesh Mohan Joshi, Indian manuscripts contain a vast store of knowledge developed over thousands of years. But access to this knowledge is not easy due to their poor condition and linguistic complexities. Efforts are being made to overcome this problem by bringing AI and traditional manuscript studies together. This will help preserve ancient literature and historical documents and provide new opportunities for their study and research in the future.
