Demand to allow use of calculators in CBSE 12th board accountancy-maths exam, Delhi HC seeks reply

The matter of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) allowing the use of calculators in the accountancy and mathematics subjects of the 12th board examination has reached the Delhi High Court. A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Delhi High Court regarding this. The petition was heard in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has issued a notice in this regard and sought a response from the central government, CBSE, National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and Parakh (National Assessment Centre).

Let’s know the whole matter in detail. Let’s know which type of calculator is allowed for use in 12th board exam. Let’s know what the Delhi High Court said during the hearing in this matter.

Basic calculator allowed

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Nitin Vasudev Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma of the Delhi High Court heard a petition seeking permission to use basic, non-programmable calculators in accountancy and mathematics exams for CBSE 12th board examination students. During the hearing, counsel appearing for CBSE said that the matter was being considered and sought time to take instructions. The petition seeks to extend the existing calculator facility for students with dyscalculia to other categories of disabled students as well.

What does the application say?

The petition said CBSE’s continued ban on calculators is arbitrary and violative of Article 14 of the Constitution of India, especially when its own syllabus committee approved a proposal to allow basic calculators in Class 12 accountancy exams in November 2024. According to the petitioner, the proposal was placed before the CBSE, but it was put on hold in December 2020 in Go2020. Proposed or implemented.

Petitioners argue that long calculations take up too much exam time, leaving students less time to demonstrate their conceptual understanding of subjects such as accountancy and mathematics.

The petition also sought a direction to the CBSE to approve calculators in mathematics and constitute an expert committee to extend the existing calculator facility to students suffering from dyscalculia and other disabled students. The petition said that despite the presentation made on August 17, implementation of the proposal and seeking appropriate response, no response has been received so far.
