Kolkata-based Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) has been shut down for now. The campus will not open until December 11. All activities including studies will be closed. All students have been asked to leave the hostel and go home. Recently, the institution has been in the news several times due to friction between students and outsiders. The college was closed after giving notice on Thursday.
The clash in late September had heated up the campus. Within a week of that incident, images were posted of another confrontation on campus. There was also a scuffle between the people involved in the procession and the police. Since then, the atmosphere of protest on campus has heated up.
Durga Puja During midnight, a large number of police forces were seen entering the campus and this time the campus has been sealed off. It has been said that the campus will be reopened when the situation normalizes.
Tension between students and administration
Officials said the students have been asked to stop the agitation. On the other hand, the students are demanding the resignation of the vice chancellor. The campus has been closed due to this conflict.
The SRFTI student union criticized the administration for issuing 14 show-cause notices and six rustication notices following the clash with ABGP members on September 27. The union said that the student who left the campus on October 3 is getting notices on October 6 and 29. Blossom Hazarika, president of the student union, attacked the university administration.
The students expressed concern over the administration’s unfair process of issuing notices without verifying basic facts, and raised questions about how students can trust the administration for their “safety”, “security” and “overall well-being”. He further said that issuing repeated notices without verification showed a “deliberate attempt to malign and malign the students”.
Politics heated up over SRFTI
However, the institute is currently closed due to conflict between the administration and students. BJP has not given any reaction on this. BJP leader Debjit Sarkar said that the officials will take the final decision on this. There has been no statement from the party.
At the same time, CPI(M) leader Shatrup Ghosh said, this is a central government body. If officers feel that they have failed to run the organization, they should resign. Center should appoint new people if necessary.
