In France, on October 31, thousands of people took to the streets for the third week in a row. The main points of protest were rising inflation, fuel prices and cuts in public services. According to a LeMonde report, around 3.20 lakh people participated in the demonstration across the country. Although most of the protests were peaceful, there were violent clashes between protesters and the police in some places. What is a molotov cocktail?
A Molotov cocktail is a type of incendiary weapon. It is also called petrol bomb. It is commonly known as an explosive or incendiary device prepared from a glass bottle. It has been used mainly during riots, wars and violent protests. Throwing it may cause fire and damage to nearby people, vehicles or buildings.
It was named after Vyacheslav Molotov, the then foreign minister of the Soviet Union. During the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-40, the Finns used such weapons against Soviet attacks. He ironically named it the Molotov Cocktail. After this the name became popular all over the world.
Why used in protest?
Molotov cocktails are often used in situations where demonstrations turn violent and protesters target security forces or government property. This is because it is an incendiary weapon with low resources and can cause massive damage when used.
