Whether you pay 10 rupees at a tea shop or pay a bill of thousands of rupees at the mall, most people these days prefer to pay through UPI. Just took out the mobile, entered the number and within seconds the payment was done. But this haste sometimes causes problems. Due to a small mistake, the money ends up in someone else’s account. By the time you realize your mistake, the transaction will be complete.
In such a situation, many people feel that they will not get their money back. But there is no need to panic. If this has happened to you too, you can try to get the money back by taking some important steps. Let us know what you should do in case of wrong UPI payment.
First, keep transaction information secure
Save the payment details as soon as you notice the error. Take a screenshot of the transaction and note the UTR number or transaction ID, date, time and amount sent. This information will be useful while filing a complaint. After this, if possible, contact the person to whose account the money has been transferred. Explain the whole thing to him calmly and show proof of payment. It is possible that he will understand your point and return the amount.
However, do not click on any link sent by any unknown person or share your UPI PIN, OTP or banking password in the name of cashback.
File a complaint on the payment app
If the person in question doesn’t pick up the phone or refuses to refund the money, file a complaint in the help section of your UPI app. In apps like Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm, you can get the option to report a problem by selecting the relevant transaction.
Clearly state in the complaint that the amount has been mistakenly transferred to another account. Fill the required information as per application instructions and save the complaint reference number.
After this, inform your bank about this as soon as possible. Provide the bank with the transaction ID, amount, date and proof of payment. The sooner you file a complaint, the sooner the matter can be investigated. However, this does not guarantee a refund.
You can also complain through NPCI
For complaints related to UPI, you can refer to the complaint procedure available on the official website of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Information on dispute resolution related to UPI is available. While filing the complaint, fill the transaction information and required documents correctly. If your issue is not resolved at the payment app or bank level, inquire about the next steps in the relevant complaint process.
Go to the bank branch and make a written complaint
Also contact your bank branch with an online complaint. Give a written application to the bank manager and attach a screenshot of the wrong transaction or a copy of the bank statement. Keep a copy of the application and the receipt of the complaint with you.
Your bank may contact the other bank and investigate the matter. But refund process may depend on availability of funds in the account, consent of concerned person and applicable rules. So, don’t assume that the bank will automatically refund the amount.
If the bank doesn’t listen, take RBI’s help
If the bank does not respond satisfactorily to your complaint, the grievance procedure of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) can be resorted to. For this, check the eligibility and conditions for lodging a complaint on the official portal of RBI. It is important to file a complaint with the bank first and keep the related documents safe.
