Jio IPO Listing: Wednesday was a very special day for Reliance Industries, the country’s largest business house. Jio Platforms has made a historic entry into the stock market of Mumbai’s National Stock Exchange (NSE). As explosive as the launch of the company was in the market, the atmosphere of the ceremony was equally emotional. At the same time as Jio’s shares were setting new records in the market, Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani was seen wiping tears from his eyes. The occasion was Jio’s listing ceremony. From this platform, Mukesh Ambani could not contain himself when his three children – Anant, Isha and Akash narrated the story of Dada Dhirubhai’s dreams and father’s struggle. The pride of the father flowed in the form of tears in the crowd.

Anant called business as worship, sharing as prasad.
Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries, was the first to take the stage. He greeted all the shareholders with ‘Jai Shri Krishna’. Anant said very simply that today the stock exchange bell is like a temple bell for him. For them business is worship and prasad is distributed after every worship. Today, Jio is being distributed as Prasad across India.
Recalling the old days, Anant said that years ago a dream came from an ordinary house in Chorwad. His grandfather Dhirubhai Ambani, who worked at a petrol pump in Aden, Yemen, showed that even an ordinary Indian can dream big. After this, father Mukesh Ambani built the world’s largest refinery on the barren land of Jamnagar. Anant said that the seed of Jio was sown by Isha Didi, whose Akash Bhai made his dream come true.
Referring to the days of lockdown, he said that when the whole world came to a standstill, children’s education did not stop because of Jio. A mother taught a son living alone in the city how to cook by looking at the color of vegetables over a video call. A soldier stationed thousands of miles away on the border made a video call home and said, “Mother, I am fine.” Anant expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the 53 crore customers, the technicians who climbed the tower in rain and shine and the vision of Digital India. He said that those three brothers and sisters are three bodies, but their souls are one.
Isha recalled the first IPO in 1977
After Anant, when Isha Ambani came on stage, she shared an incident from the dinner table at home. Isha said that a few evenings ago father Mukesh Ambani was reminiscing about the days of 1977. He was only 20 at the time and was working on Reliance’s first IPO. Dada Dhirubhai wanted not only a few rich people to own the company but also the common man of the country. At that time Rs. 10 crore at a valuation of Rs. 2.82 crore was raised. Today, after 50 years, that circle of trust is complete.
Isha said that in just 10 years, Jio has generated a total revenue of around $15.5 billion and an actual profit of $8 billion. Very few companies in the world have been able to achieve this position in such a short period of time. Describing the hard work behind this success, Isha heaped praise on her brother Akash. He said that in the past 13 years of this journey, Akash has rarely returned home before 12 midnight. Isha thanked grandmother Kokilaben, mother Nita Ambani, uncle Manoj and the entire family. Finally looking at his father he said that father always sees the future which others cannot. We are where we are today because of you.
A record in 95 minutes, Akash’s marriage bet
Jio Managing Director Akash Ambani took the mic after sister Isha. He got emotional as soon as he came on stage. Thanking the investors, he said that this country’s largest IPO was fully subscribed in just 95 minutes. This is the fastest record ever. The demand for this IPO was more than 7.5 lakh crore and more than 1.3 crore Indians expressed their faith in Jio.
Akash said that after completing his studies abroad, he returned to India with only one aim, so that he could make the country digital with his father. He narrated the story of Anjali, a girl from the hills of Kerala. Anjali had to walk two kilometers up a hill every day to download school lessons on her phone, as there was no network down there. With the advent of Jio, their problems ended and their home itself became a classroom.
Akaash told an interesting event on the night of 20th February 2017 to lighten the atmosphere a bit. Jio crossed the 10 crore subscriber mark that night. Akash smiles and says that his father had put a condition before him that they can’t get married until Jio gets 10 crore customers. So that night I had two big reasons to celebrate.
Plan for the next 10 years… Internet from space, AI at home
Talking about the way forward, Akash said that when he joined Jio, the company neither had any customers nor any revenue. But today more than 54 crore customers are connected to the company’s indigenous platform. Before IPO, every customer used to say ‘I made Jio’, now they say to every shareholder ‘together we will make a new Jio’.
He remembered his grandfather Dhirubhai Ambani’s dream of ‘bread, clothes, houses and mobiles’. Akash promised that in the first 10 years, Jio has brought data to the common people. Now in the next 10 years the company will take every new technology like AI, cloud and space connectivity to every corner of the country. His dream is that whenever the world’s greatest technology companies are counted, the name of Jio Platforms Limited is surely included in it. Finally he promised SEBI, NSE, BSE and all the investors that the company will strengthen their confidence every day.
