Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has reached Miami, USA. Once there he declared himself the real leader of Brazil. He accused the country’s Supreme Court and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of rigging the election and keeping him out of power. However, Lula won the election by around 4.5 million votes.
Flavio also did not comply with the Supreme Court order asking him to surrender his passport. He thanked Argentine President Javier Milli for helping him reach America. He also thanked US President Donald Trump, who granted visas to Flavio and his family to come to America.
First called himself President, then changed the statement
Flavio posted an open letter on social media platform X. In this he first described himself as the President-elect. Later he removed this post and issued a new letter. In this he considered himself the rightful leader of Brazil. He said that his 60 million supporters and all of Brazil should know that he is the leader of the country. He alleged that those who steal votes are part of a criminal organization, which has installed a dictatorship in the country.

However, Brazil’s Federal Electoral Court, several countries’ leaders, international observers and Flavio’s own party recognized Lula’s victory. Electoral Commission chief Cassio Nunes Marks also said that the election was held according to the rules of law and the constitution. Trump declined to comment on Flavio’s statement. However, before this he has described the Brazilian election as very strange.
There is little hope of success on the demand to cancel the election
Flavio has provided no evidence of election fraud. They allege that a Supreme Court judge supporting Lula extended the voting time by two hours on Sunday. Lula’s party complained that voters in the north-eastern states were prevented from voting. On the other hand, Flavio’s party also demanded extension of polling time due to rain in southern states.
According to an analysis by Professor Pedro Burgos of Insper, less than 35 thousand votes were cast in the additional two hours. This was about 0.03 percent of the total votes cast. According to experts, Flavio’s demand to cancel the election is highly unlikely to succeed. Flavio said he did not flee Brazil, but left the country to protect himself and his family. He accused Lula and the Supreme Court of targeting him.
Flavio’s father also went to America
His father and former president Jair Bolsonaro also moved to the US after losing to Lula in 2022. Later, upon his return to Brazil, he was sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting to overthrow the coup. This dispute may increase the pressure on the relations between America and Brazil. Brazil has the second largest reserves of rare minerals in the world. Lula has accused the US of trying to return the Bolsonaro family to power. The US government has refused to interfere in Brazil’s domestic affairs.
