Why did Apple name the iPhone? Most people don’t know its real meaning

When most people hear the name iPhone, Apple and its famous logo come to mind. There is a huge craze for this Apple phone all over the world. As soon as the new iPhone goes on sale, many people line up outside the store for hours to buy it. But have you ever wondered what the small i in the iPhone’s name stands for?

Many people think that the i in iPhone just means internet. However, this is not the whole story. Indeed, this little letter from Apple has a special connection with the company’s branding and the thinking of Steve Jobs. Interestingly, the use of i started long before the iPhone.

Before the iPhone came the iMac.

Apple first used i in product names in 1998. At that time the company had launched a computer named iMac. This was a time when Apple was going through tough economic times and Steve Jobs had returned to the company.

During the launch of the iMac, Steve Jobs explained through a slide what the small I used in the name represented. This started the process of adding i to the names of many Apple products.

Steve Jobs said the five meanings of i

During the launch, Steve Jobs said that the first i stands for Internet. At that time the internet was not as easy to use as it is today. The iMac was designed so that people could easily connect to the Internet. But my story was not limited to the Internet. Steve Jobs gave it four more meanings.

The first was the individual, meaning that each person has his own needs and identity. The second was instruction, which was related to learning and teaching. The third was Inform, i.e. making it easy for people to get information. The fourth meaning was Inspire, meaning to inspire people to do something new and show their creativity. In this way, Apple gathered many different ideas in a small letter.

iMac to iPod and then iPhone

After the iMac, I became part of Apple’s identity. In 2001, the company launched its portable music player, called the iPod. A few years later, on January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone to the world.

At that time iPhone was not presented as just a phone. Steve Jobs called it a combination of a phone, a touchscreen iPod, and an Internet communicator. The I present in the name also carries forward the same old identity of Apple.

Why doesn’t every Apple product have an i now?

Technology has changed a lot with time. Internet is no longer an isolated feature of a particular device, but has become a daily necessity. Perhaps this is the reason why I don’t see it in the name of every new Apple product.

Products like Apple Watch, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro are examples of this. Yet presented in names like iPhone, iPad, and iMac, it still harkens back to Apple’s bygone era, its branding, and the thinking of Steve Jobs.

That means the iPhone’s i is not just the Internet. This is part of Apple’s thinking, which, along with the Internet, provided individuals with information, learning, and inspiration to innovate.

This premium phone of Xiaomi has become expensive again, after the price increase, it will now be available at this price
