Tesla has made a big decision with its most popular electric pickup, the Cybertruck. The company is planning to shut down production at its Gigafactory in Texas, USA by mid-2027. CEO Elon Musk has given this information on social media platform X. According to him, the discontinuation of Cybertruck production will free up space in the factory, which the company will use to ramp up production of its new Cybertruck. The special thing is that the company has decided to stop production of CyberTruck only three years after it started.
Tesla has made a big decision with its popular electric pickup Cybertruck. The company is planning to shut down its production at the Gigafactory in Texas, USA by mid-2027. CEO Elon Musk has given this information on social media platform X. According to him, the discontinuation of Cybertruck production will free up space at the factory, which the company will use to ramp up production of its new Cybercab. The special thing is that the company has decided to stop production of CyberTruck only three years after it started. Earlier, Tesla also stopped production of Model S and Model X.
Why is the production of Cybertruck discontinued?
Tesla first introduced the Cybertruck as a concept model in 2019. At that time the company had planned to start selling it in 2021, but the launch kept getting delayed due to various reasons. Finally, in 2023, its production began at the Gigafactory in Texas and it became available for sale.
Tesla included it among the most exclusive passenger vehicles. It competed in the market with electric pickups like the Ford F-150 Lightning. Currently the Cybertruck is sold in the US, Mexico, Canada, UAE, Qatar, South Korea and Saudi Arabia.
The car was initially hyped and sold well, but later demand began to falter. The special stainless steel body used with its unique and sharp design was also in the news. However, the company could not launch it there due to not meeting the safety standards in Europe.
Cybertruck sales were much lower than expected
The cost of the Cybertruck also became a challenge for the company. At the time of launch it was priced much higher than what was introduced in 2019. Apart from this, controversies related to Elon Musk also affected its popularity.
So far, the Cybertruck is expected to sell around 63,000 units. This figure is much lower than Musk’s estimate, in which he expected to sell 2.5 lakh units per year.
The CyberCab will replace the CyberTruck
Tesla now wants to focus more on its fully autonomous electric taxi CyberCab instead of the CyberTruck. It has no steering wheel, pedals, outside rearview mirrors (ORVM) and rear windshield. It has butterfly doors and will be made a part of the company’s ride-hailing service.
After production of the Cybertruck ceases, Tesla will have only the Model 3 and Model Y as passenger cars in the global market. However, deliveries of the next-generation Roadster are expected to begin in 2028. Apart from this, the company is also working on a smaller and cheaper electric car, but no timeline has been announced for its launch as of now.
