Despite the heavy losses caused by the floods, Nepal has earned more than US$39 million by exporting electricity to India. From mid-September to mid-October, Nepal sold 633.986 million units of electricity to India. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Dirgyu Kumar Shrestha gave this information on Sunday.
According to Durguy Kumar Shrestha, several hydroelectric projects in Nepal were damaged by flash floods in August. However, the export of electricity continued. During this period, Nepal earned more than 5.925 billion Nepali rupees or about 370 crore Indian rupees. Two-thirds of the exported electricity was sent under bilateral power sale agreements with India.
Exports to Bangladesh also started through India’s network
At the same time, Nepal on Friday also resumed exporting 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh through India’s transmission network. Flash floods near the Nepal-Tibet border damaged the Trishuli and Chilime hydropower plants, which were earlier approved to supply power to Bangladesh.
Pal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Durguy Kumar Shrestha said that after the Central Electricity Authority of India allowed electricity generated from other hydropower projects to be sent to the neighboring country (Bangladesh), the export of electricity to Bangladesh may resume.
1400 dead, 5000 missing due to floods in Nepal
On 26 August, floods caused by snow and rock slides (avalanches) in the high Himalayas near the Nepal-Tibet border devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal. About 1,400 people have died in the disaster, while more than 5,000 people are still missing. The floods damaged houses, vehicles, roads, bridges and hydropower projects.
