If the car breaks down, road accident or any other problem occurs while traveling on the National Highway, it is very important to get help at the right time. In such a situation, the 1033 helpline of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) comes handy for the passengers. This number can be used for medical emergency on the highway, vehicle breakdown and help like ambulance or crane as needed. But if for some reason the call is not being received on 1033 then instead of worrying it is important to know about other options.

If there is no answer on 1033, call 112

112 can be called if there is an accident on the National Highway, someone is injured or there is an urgent need for police and ambulance. This is a unified number used across the country for emergency services such as police, health and fire.

When calling, clearly explain your problem. Also give information about the name of the highway, the direction you are going and any toll plazas or milestones present nearby. This will make it easier for the help team to find your exact location. If the situation is serious, contact the emergency services immediately instead of wasting time in filing an online complaint.

Assistance can also be obtained from nearby toll plazas

If the vehicle gets stuck on the highway or any road-related problem arises, contacting the nearest toll plaza staff is also an option. You can see the contact numbers given on the information board present there. Information about the authorities concerned or the road operator can also be found on the toll receipt.

While calling, state your problem and the location of the vehicle, so that the relevant team can be informed. However, it is important to note that the same contact number is not necessarily given on every toll plaza receipt.

Register road complaints through Highway Yatra app

NHAI’s Highway Yatra app and official portal can be used if there are potholes on the highway, bad road conditions, complaints regarding the behavior of toll personnel or any facility issues. Here is an option to lodge a road related complaint.

While making a complaint, give the name of the highway, the location of the problem and if possible its photo. This can help in understanding the problem and taking action on it. But if someone’s life is in danger or need immediate help after an accident, call the emergency number instead of complaining on the app.

What if an ambulance or crane is needed?

NHAI’s 1033 helpline is designed to provide assistance in situations like vehicle breakdowns and medical emergencies on highways. Assistance can be provided by ambulance, crane or patrol vehicle as needed. If you cannot reach 1033 and the case is serious, call 112.

102 is also listed as the National Ambulance Service in the Helpline Directory of the Government of India. However, the availability and scope of services may vary in different states.

If you get stuck on the highway, keep these things in mind

If the vehicle breaks down or has an accident on the highway, first ensure the safety of yourself and those sitting with you. If possible, park the vehicle in a safe place away from traffic and turn on the hazard lights.

When calling for assistance, state your exact location, vehicle type and problem. In case of an accident, avoid standing in the middle of the road or recklessly walking into traffic. Providing the right information and staying safe makes it easier for the relief team to understand the situation.
