If your phone frequently loses network, internet doesn’t work properly or current telecom company’s recharge plan doesn’t suit your needs, switching operators is an option. For this you will not need to change your mobile number. Through Mobile Number Portability (MNP), you can use another company’s service on the same number.
To port a SIM, you first need to get a Unique Porting Code (UPC). After this, one has to go to the authorized store or retailer of the new company and complete the form and KYC process. Let’s know the complete method of mobile number porting, fees involved and important rules related to it.
Follow these steps to port the SIM
Step 1: First send SMS from your existing mobile number. In the message write PORT, space and enter your 10 digit mobile number. Now send it to 1900.
Step 2: After this you will get Unique Porting Code (UPC) from 1901 number. Keep it safe, as it will be needed when giving the porting request to the new company.
Step 3: Now go to the authorized store or Point of Sale (PoS) of the telecom company you wish to avail of the network. There Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) and Mobile Number Porting Form have to be filled.
Step 4: Provide the UPC code while submitting the form and complete the required KYC process. If the new operator charges porting charges, those may also have to be paid. After submitting the request, you will get information about it via SMS.
Step 5: If you want to change your decision about porting, you can cancel the request within 24 hours of submission. For this write CANCEL and give space and enter your mobile number. Send this SMS to 1900.
Step 6: It usually takes 3 working days to port the number to the same telecom circle. If porting to another circle, you may have to wait up to 5 working days. This time may be up to 15 working days in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and some areas of North East.
Step 7: Once the porting is complete, the service of the old operator will be stopped. After this, insert the new company’s SIM into the phone and complete the verification as required. After this your old number will be activated on the new company’s network.
What are the charges for sim porting?
