India has secured the 10th position in the 48th World Skills Competition 2026 held in Shanghai, China. The Indian team performed brilliantly in the competition and won 6 silver medals and 20 medals for excellence. Earlier, India finished 13th in the last World Skills Lyon 2024, where the team won 4 bronze medals and 12 medals for excellence. This year’s exhibition showcases the skills and competitiveness of Indian youth at the global level.
India won 6 silver medals in various categories. Silver medals were won by Smriti Nambiar in Bakery, Mohammad Salam in Dental Prosthetics, Kovid Ajay Gangrade in Digital Interactive Media Design, Parth Vohra in Industrial Design Technology, Mehrunisa Begum in Logistics and Freight Forwarding and Sania Joshi in Retail Sales.
India also won 20 medals for excellence in technical, industrial, digital, creative and service skills. Smriti Nambiar, silver medalist in bakery, was also selected as the best nation for India.
70 Indians participated in 63 skills
More than 1,400 youth participants from around 70 countries and regions participated in the six-day international event, which ran from September 22 to 27. India sent its largest ever contingent. It featured 70 Indian contestants across 63 skills, showcasing their talent in categories such as advanced manufacturing, engineering, digital technology, creative industries and specialized services.
The grand finale was held on September 27 after the four-day main matches from September 23 to 26. It was attended by participants, experts, international delegations and industry representatives from around the world. The ceremony honored participants who demonstrated technical proficiency, innovation, precision and craftsmanship.
Jayant Chaudhary congratulated Team India
Minister of State (Independent Charge) and Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, congratulated the participants, experts, trainers and industry partners on Team India’s performance. He said that the exhibition with 6 silver medals and 20 medals for excellence is a significant achievement in India’s global skills journey.
He said that Indian youth represented the country on the world stage with their confidence, determination and excellence. According to him, this achievement further strengthens India’s efforts towards developing a future-ready skilling ecosystem.
Manisha Sansarma, Official Representative of WorldSkills India and Senior Economic Advisor, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship also congratulated the Indian team for their success.
India’s entry in 11 new skill categories
This year, India participated for the first time in 11 new and emerging skill categories. These include dental prosthetics, digital interactive media design, intelligent security technology, landscape gardening, optoelectronic technology, retail sales, unmanned aerial systems, industrial mechanics, software testing, heavy vehicle technology and aircraft maintenance.

India’s participation in these new categories reflects the country’s changing skills ecosystem. Emphasis is placed on skill development in line with emerging technologies, future employment and industry needs.
Female participants also showed strength
WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 also saw active participation of Indian women participants in various technical, creative and service categories. He represented India in many fields including chemical laboratory technology, logistics and freight forwarding, fashion technology, visual merchandising, health and social care and hospitality.
India’s participation in World Skill Shanghai 2026 was organized by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE). Sector Skill Councils, industry partners, training institutes, technical experts and other stakeholders contributed to this.
During the competition, Indian participants and experts got exposure to global business standards, new technologies and international best practices. This can help further improve India’s training and evaluation system.
India’s achievement at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 is not limited to medals. 70 young Indian participants showcased their abilities on the world’s largest skills platform. This experience can prove useful in pursuing quality skill development, industry partnerships and global benchmarking in India.
